What is art without the muse? Many of western art’s most famous works are depictions of women; but who were these women? Do they have their own stories to share with the world?
ArtMuse is a podcast that shares the life stories of the women pictured in famous works of art. While these women’s faces are familiar to viewers around the world, their identities have been largely forgotten. By sharing their stories, host Grace Anna aims to reshape the ways in which we interpret these well-known works, and appreciate them from a new perspective; through the eyes of the women whose image stares back at us.
Each episode focuses our attention on a specific female muse, sharing their important life and legacy. ArtMuse’s mission is to pay dues to the women whose images have been immortalized but whose names have been wrongfully written out of history.
ArtMuse is produced by Kula Production Company.
Meet the host: Grace Anna
Grace Anna is an art historian and eternal learner with an insatiable curiosity. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MA from NYU Gallatin, where she took most of her courses at the renowned Institute of Fine Arts. Her area of expertise is Italian Renaissance and Baroque art.
Grace Anna started this podcast to advocate for women who have so often been unfairly written out of history, despite their immense contributions, and to make a case for their important legacies. On a personal level, the podcast has also allowed Grace Anna to engage with art history outside of traditional avenues, which can so often feel limiting. Through ArtMuse, Grace Anna seeks to transform the pathways that art historians and enthusiasts can take, so that more of us can contribute to the art historical dialogue.
She hopes that ArtMuse is a launching pad for other related projects. She aims to publish many of the stories she’s shared on the podcast into a book. She would also love to share these women’s stories through other mediums, such as documentaries and historical fiction. And she dreams of one day curating an exhibition focused on the female muse.
Grace Anna currently works and lives in Brooklyn, with her partner and dog, Gemma. She has been pouring her heart and soul into the making of ArtMuse and is immensely grateful for the community of listeners that has been growing over time.
